MATERIALS HANDLING SAFETY

WORKPLACE SAFETY

Course Description

Materials handling is the term used for the movement, protection, storage and control of materials and products throughout manufacturing, warehousing, and distribution. It is one of the leading causes of workplace injuries, because handling heavy or bulky materials and product improperly can lead to injuries to the back and other joints, as well as other sprains and strains, fracture, bruises, and cuts. The purpose of this course is to help prevent injuries caused by improper materials handling and storage. Topics covered include repetitive motion risk factors associated with materials handling operations, safe lifting techniques for manually handling an object, and how to use materials handling equipment in lifting and moving. The course also examines hazards and safety precautions when handling chemicals, working around forklifts and other powered industrial trucks, and using slings and overhead gantry cranes.
